As one of the leading exterior remodeling companies in Greater MA, Premier Exteriors & Design is dedicated to keeping our clients informed of the latest news in the industry. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced an update to the ENERGY STAR rating requirements for windows and sliding glass doors that will come into effect in 2023.

What Does This Mean for Homeowners?

As of January 1, 2023, all residential windows and sliding glass doors must meet the new Energy Star requirements in order to qualify for a tax credit. These criteria include a U-factor of less than or equal to 0.20 in all zones, a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of greater than or equal to 0.20 in the Northern Zone, and a North American Fenestration Standard/Specification (NAFS) Performance Grade of 15 or higher.

What Does This Mean for Home Improvement Companies?

Unfortunately, the increased standards and regulations mean that the cost of windows that meet these requirements will soon rise across the board. This means that any existing windows and doors that don’t meet these standards will become increasingly difficult to sell. Home improvement companies that sell outdated models will be forced to unload these windows at a discount in order to clear out their inventory.
